The Arctic Tundra of the Kola Peninsula

More than 90,000 square kilometres of taiga and tundra make up the Kola Peninsula, a harsh and beautiful place full of stones, lakes and incredibly clean rivers. It is known as the edge of the midday sun and the home to Atlantic salmon and to the fairy tale character Murman. Since ancient times there have been legends about the area’s many riches: Its deer, fine furs, fish and other sea creatures. The Kola Peninsula is located in Russia’s far north with only the Barents Sea and the Arctic Ocean beyond it. It is a kingdom of permafrost and the wild Arctic tundra. There are no settlements or roads here – the only way in is by sea or by helicopter. There is still life however, on this northern, frozen land.
