The Peter and Paul Fortress, St. Petersburg

The heart of Saint-Petersburg t he Peter and Paul Fortress was a point the history of the city started from. This unique fortification construction has been half-closed territory with a commandant and a fortress garrison from the beginning of the 18th century up to 1920s. But these days one can see it with one's own eyes. What hasn't the fortress seen for the 300 years. In the first years it has been the place where all major state institutions including the state pharmacy, the provision shops, the Treasury and the prison were located. After the Revolution many facilities were transferred to usual living habitations. Even in the 1970s the architectural monuments were settled by people. Now there's the museum in the fortress territory. One can not only get acquainted with the history of Saint-Petersburg but walk around the fortress, ascend to the bell tower of the Peter and Paul Cathedral, get to know the secrets of the Russian Bastille known as the Trubetskoy Bastion prison, take a fortress tram and look in the mysterious underground patterns.
