If music can be found and expressed in people's souls, then the sound of the Bashkir soul is undoubtedly that of the quaray — their national wind instrument made from reeds. For these musicians the quaray is not only a tribute to their national traditions, but a whole philosophy. According to legend, this simple instrument was given to the Bashkirs by God himself. The sound the instrument makes has been described as the sound wind makes as it blows through the steppes, bringing images of what life was like for the first people living in the area. The skills of one of the Bashkir Republic's most famed quaray players, Robert Yuldashev, have taken him all over Europe, giving him the opportunity to perform on the stage of the world-reknowned La Scala Theatre and record soundtracks for both Russian and foreign films.
