Whether it’s learning how to ride a surfboard, performing on stage for the first time or seeing what it’s like to be a sailor or a journalist, the all-Russia children’s center Orlyonok (baby eagle), offers dozens of opportunities to try something new to kids and teens who spend summers on the Black Sea coast in southern Russia. Orlyonok, built in 1960, originally consisted of a few tents and cabins, but today this center occupies 245 hectares and is the home to 7 different summer camps that 20,000 campers visit every year. Here you can find a museum and observatory, a library and TV studio, a stadium and swimming pool. This is a small place where the traditions and rules created by decades of campers have been preserved. Here kindness, tolerance, leadership, patriotism, friendship and the world aren’t simply words, but a lifestyle.
